Independent Living Services

In Georgia and nationwide, the Centers for Independent Living (CILS) provide training, coaching and independent living resources to individuals experiencing barriers to independent living due to one or more disabilities. Centers in Georgia include: Access 2 Independence (Columbus), Bainbridge Individual Advocacy Network (Bainbridge), Disability Connections (Macon), Disability Resource Center (Demorest), disABILITY Link (Atlanta), Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living (Rome), Living Independence for Everyone (Savannah), Multiple Choices (Athens), and Walton Options for Independent Living (Augusta).

The Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency works closely with the State Independent Council (SILC) and the nine participating Centers for Independent Living (CILs) to execute the State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL). As the Designated State Entity (DSE), GVRA oversees federal funding provided to the CILs and works closely with each CIL on their focus in ensuring integrated, accessible and inclusive communities are developed, while providing opportunities for people with disabilities across the state of Georgia.

Services and Activities: The CILs offer services to persons with disabilities that promote full access to community life including geographic scope, determination of eligibility and statewide applicability. These services can include counseling, (including psychological, psychotherapeutic, and related services). Other services may include but are not limited to securing housing or shelter, including but not limited to community group living and adaptive housing services (including appropriate accommodations to and modifications of any space used to serve, or occupied by, individuals with disabilities).
