Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) Observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Nationwide campaign will take place in October
(Atlanta, GA) — Today, GVRA announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which aligns with the organization’s mission of employment opportunities for all individuals with disabilities who want careers. NDEAM is observed annually. This year’s theme is "Inclusion Drives Innovation", a concept that aligns with our own belief that we must always look to new strategies as we work to build the most diverse workforce possible.
The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
"Our organization is built upon the idea that we’re at our best when everyone has a voice and a seat at the table, because our inclusiveness and diversity makes us a smarter workforce,” said Sean T. Casey, Executive Director of GVRA. “It’s important that we recognize the multiplier effect that happens when skilled, talented people with disabilities use those talents. Not only do their lives and their families’ lives improve personally and financially, but their employers benefit from everything they have to offer, and the local, state and federal economy is enriched. We want to do everything we can to show employers why it’s smart business to look at those qualified candidates who also happen to have disabilities.”
Throughout the month, GVRA will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate coworkers, clients and employer partners on NDEAM. We encourage the community to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for NDEAM ideas and resources visit gvs.ga.gov for sample proclamations to get your local elected officials involved.
