Honoring the Legacy of Dominic Parker: A Backpack Initiative That Gave Back to the Community He Loved

Dominic Parker, who served with Access to Independence Center for Independent Living in Columbus, Georgia, was the heart and mind behind a recent backpack initiative that provided 34 fully stocked backpacks to students in need. The backpacks were recently delivered to Richards Middle School providing timely support to students who could benefit from the extra resources. More than just supplies, this donation reflected Dominic’s deep commitment to empowering youth and giving back to the community he loved.

Before his passing, Dominic reached out to multiple associations and organizations to include The Blind Titans and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Canes, with which he was involved, rallying them to partner in this initiative. Through his leadership, collaboration, and unwavering dedication, the effort came together successfully driven by his desire to make a difference in the lives of students. In accordance with Dominic’s wishes, the backpacks were delivered by Tory Baggett, the Access 2 Independence Pathways 2 Partnerships Center for Independent Living Instructor and Jennifer Whetstone, the GVRA Pathways 2 Partnerships Educator Liaison serving the
Muscogee School District. Together, they presented the backpacks to Duane Wizzard, Ed.S., Principal of Richards Middle School, who was so appreciative. Dominic was known for his selflessness and servant heart. He consistently placed the needs of others before his own, and this initiative stands as a lasting tribute to the values he lived by. His legacy will live on in the students who benefit from his generosity and in the Pathways to Partnerships community he helped strengthen.

“Dominic always believed in giving back, especially when it came to young people,” said Whetstone. “This backpack drive wasn’t just a one-time act. It was a symbol of the kind of person he was. He wanted every student to feel supported and valued.” As the students at Richards Middle School carry their new supplies, they also carry with them the spirit of someone who believed in their potential. Dominic’s vision, kindness, and commitment to service will continue to uplift and inspire all those who work within the Pathways to Partnerships program each and every day.
