Assistive Work Technology (AWT)

The GVRA’s Vocational Rehabilitation program includes a unique assistive work technology (AWT) team assigned to districts.

The Process

The AWT team begins working with a client when they receive a referral from a VR counselor.

The team’s Rehab Technologist initiates a comprehensive cost-free assessment of the client’s abilities to determine what sort of technology would be of greatest assistance to them in meeting the goals set in the client’s Work Plan.

The technologist calls on the expertise of other team members as needed.

After completion of the assessment, the team will identify the best AWT device with cost and provider options and will address any special design or installation requirements.

The team’s recommendations may involve not only using AWT devices but also education or training designed to develop vocational skills.

AWT Services for Farmers

The assistive work technology (AWT) team for agricultural clients consists of the Rehabilitation Technologist, Rehabilitation Engineer, and Occupational Therapist.

The Rehabilitation Technologist identifies the particular needs related to technological or adaptation for the farmer/client. They will work with vendors to discern applicable tools, technology, or equipment access.  The Rehab Tech is also able to create customized or custom-modified solutions for unique situations.  They will handle the bid solicitation process, and often participate in the implementation of the adaptive and assistive technology and tools, customizations, and training on the new technology.

The Rehabilitation Engineer provides recommendations and oversees the implementation of vehicle and home modifications that often allow the client to access and transfer to various truck tractors and other farm equipment and to improve general accessibility within the farm or home setting.

The Occupational Therapist performs assessments to determine the client’s capability and needs to perform various farm work that demands implementing the use of equipment technology and modifications.

The AWT team often collaborates and provides services with the AgrAbility program from the University of Georgia.

The AWT Team will identify the assistive technology and services that will best assist the client with their farm’s duties and goals such as:

  • Equipment adaptations
  • Vehicle implements and modifications
  • Fence build/repair tools
  • Tool adaptations
  • Assistive technology
  • Gate modifications
  • Auto feeders/waterers
  • Livestock working systems
  • Rear-view camera systems
  • Prosthetic modifications
  • Farm management transport
