Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes the contributions of workers with disabilities and promotes the importance of inclusive and accessible workplaces.
This year’s NDEAM theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” highlights the skills, talents, and contributions people with disabilities bring to the workforce.
The Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) is committed to serving Georgians with disabilities and empowering individuals to live independently through meaningful employment and greater access to opportunities.
GVRA by the Numbers
During Fiscal Year 2026, GVRA:
- Served 28,487 individuals through Vocational Rehabilitation services
- Served 34,890 students with disabilities
- Achieved a 55% successful employment rate
Throughout the year, GVRA staff participates in community and school events across Georgia to connect individuals with disabilities and their families to resources, employment services, and Pre-Employment Transition Services. These outreach efforts also help individuals learn more about GVRA and access the agency’s online referral process.
“NDEAM is an opportunity to recognize the talents, skills, and contributions of Georgians with disabilities and to highlight the importance of creating pathways to meaningful employment,” said Dr. Kirk Shook, GVRA Executive Director. “At GVRA, we are committed to connecting individuals with the resources, services, and opportunities they need to pursue their employment goals and greater independence.”
GVRA also encourages businesses and organizations across Georgia to help create more inclusive workplaces by implementing supportive workplace policies, improving accessibility, and recognizing the value that employees with disabilities bring to their teams.
This NDEAM, GVRA celebrates the value and talent of Georgians with disabilities and remains committed to building greater opportunities for individuals to achieve their employment and independence goals.
