BTG Summer Dreamers’ Camp Inspires Youth to Dream Big and Plan for the Future

“Connecting Youth to a Successful Future Through Peer Support, Skills, and Opportunity” is the motto of Pathway to Dreams: Bridging the Gap (BTG), and it was brought to life by 46 youth who attended the BTG Summer Dream Camp held June 1-5 at Roosevelt Warm Springs.

Campers stayed on the Roosevelt Warm Springs campus and participated in a variety of engaging activities focused on post-secondary education, career exploration, financial literacy, workplace readiness, and future goal planning. Throughout the four-day experience, students gained valuable skills, built meaningful connections, and explored opportunities designed to help them achieve their dreams and prepare for successful futures.

This year's camp was made possible through GVRA’s partnership with Centers for Independent Living (CILs) across Georgia. Participating organizations and districts included:

  • Access 2 Independence / VR District 5 – 5 youth
  • Disability Connections / VR District 6 – 8 youth
  • disABILITY LINK / VR District 2 – 8 youth
  • LIFE / VR District 8 – 7 youth
  • Multiple Choices / VR District 4 – 2 youth
  • NWGACIL / VR District 1 – 2 youth
  • Walton Options / VR District 7 – 14 youth

Encouragement and Inspiration

Camp kicked off with energy and excitement as students heard from BTG alumnus Ayden Norwood, a recent Roosevelt Warm Springs graduate, who shared his personal journey and experiences. His story encouraged campers to embrace new opportunities and pursue their goals with confidence.

Students also enjoyed an inspiring presentation from Cody Clark Magic. Through a unique blend of motivational speaking and magic, Clark demonstrated how individuals with disabilities can develop important life skills, overcome challenges, and become successful adults.

Career Exploration and Post-Secondary Opportunities

Throughout the week, campers explored a variety of career and educational pathways. Students toured Roosevelt Warm Springs and Columbus Technical College, where they learned about certification programs, diploma options, and career opportunities available after high school.

Campers also traveled to Great Wolf Lodge and Callaway Gardens, where they received an inside look at careers in aquatics, engineering, operations, guest services, and food and beverage operations. Through interactive presentations, career-themed scavenger hunts, and workplace readiness lessons, students gained firsthand insight into the skills and responsibilities associated with various professions.

The learning continued as campers participated in hands-on activities focused on workplace readiness, financial literacy, and self-discovery. Through popular camp experiences such as the Dream Bank, Starlight Snack Bar, and the Superstar Spending Zone Event, students practiced earning, budgeting, spending, and saving money in real-world scenarios.

As the week came to a close, campers left with new knowledge, increased confidence, and a clearer vision for their futures. The growth and determination displayed by this year’s Summer Dreamers serve as a reminder of the power of opportunity, mentorship, entity cross-collaboration, and support.

Special thanks to the Roosevelt Warm Springs staff, CIL peer mentors, and GVRA team members who participated inspiring our youth and helping turn dreams into goals.
